Aspects in astrology

How aspects in astrology can hide your true energy

Aspects are a concept in astrology that describes the position of the celestial bodies in relation to each other. More precisely, aspects are the angles, or degrees, between the sun, the moon, the planets and the various points in a birth chart.

If, for example, two planets are right next to each other, meaning that there are more or less zero degrees between them in the chart, this aspect is called a conjunction.

If, on the other hand, the planets are opposite each other, 180 degrees apart in the chart, the aspect is called opposition.

A simple example of how it looks like in a birth chart

In the very simplistic birth chart below, a person is standing on earth (represented by the middle of the circle) looking southwards. There, we see the symbol for the sun, a little circle with a dot in the center. Opposite the sun, on the other side of earth, is the planet Mars

A red dotted line between them shows the aspect called opposition.

Not far from Mars are the symbols of the moon and Venus. They are next to each other, and the aspect formed between the planets is called conjunction.

If there are 90 degrees between the planets, the aspect is called square. When there are 60 degrees between the planets the aspect is called trine and when there are 30 degrees between the planets the aspect is called sextile.

When these aspects are found in a birth chart, it means that the celestial bodies affect the person in different ways.

Favorable and non-favorable aspects

In astrology, certain aspects are considered more favorable than others. For example, conjunction, trine and sextile are considered favorable aspects, while opposition and square are considered troublesome aspects, where the energies of the planets come into conflict with each other.

Orb – the accepted deviation from exact angles

The aspects do not have to be completely precise. For example, at a conjunction, the planets do not have to be exactly at the same degree; there can be a few degrees between them. This difference in degrees is called orb in astrology.

There are different opinions about how many degrees of deviation are acceptable for each aspect.

Some think the planets and points in the chart can deviate as much as 10 degrees. The more the deviation, that is, the larger the orb that is accepted, the less of an impact will the aspect have on the person.

Aspects and the electromagnetic field

However, aspects have a marginal importance in the birth chart. The energy imprint we receive at our birth consists of the specific energy that was present at exactly that time and place. That energy comes mainly from the sun and the earth’s magnetic field, as well as from the moon.

Sunring astrology considers astrology as an energy system that was once created by a culture unknown to us.

We are constantly surrounded by enormous energy flows from the sun, the earth’s magnetic field and the moon, even though we can only see visible light that only makes up less than one percent of all the electromagnetic radiation that we are surrounded by.

The energy shifts and varies depending on how the sun, earth and moon are in relation to each other. The energies from the planets are marginal in comparison.

The energies that will mainly characterize a person at birth are thus described by the sun’s position in relation to the earth’s magnetic field as well as by the sunring and the position of the moon in the birth chart. Frequently asked questions about aspects in astrology

What are aspects in astrology?

In astrology, aspects refer to the relationships between planets in a natal chart (also called birth chart or horoscope). Aspects indicate how planetary energies interact, and thereby influence different parts of your personality.

What are the five major aspects?

The five major aspects are:

Conjunction (0°): Two or more planets are next to each other in the same zodiac sign. This aspect can form a harmonious combination or a conflicting one, depending on the planets involved.

Opposition (180°): Two planets are on opposite sides of the chart. This is often considered a challenging aspect, but it can also stimulate personal growth.

Square (90°): In this aspect, planets are 90° apart in the birth chart. This is also a “hard” aspect (like opposition) and is often associated with tension and life lessons.

Trine (120°): In this aspect, there are 120° between two or more planets in a birth chart This is a harmonious aspect between planets in the same element (e.g., fire signs, earth signs).

Sextile (60°): In this aspect, there are 60° between two or more planets in the birth chart. This is also a positive and cooperative aspect between planets, as they are positioned in compatible elements, like air signs and fire signs.

How do aspects influence a natal chart?

In conventional astrology, aspects are thought to influence how planetary energies manifest in our life, shaping our relationships, challenges, strengths and life path. They reveal how planets interact and affect areas like career, love and personal growth.

When astrology is seen as a method to describe how we are influenced by the electromagnetic fields around us, planets have a lesser importance than is usually ascribed to them. See more about it in

How electromagnetic astrology affects us as humans and What is sunring astrology.

What are challenging aspects?

Challenging aspects are for example square and opposition. They create tension and obstacles, but because of this they can also stimulate personal growth. On a broader scale, they can help humanity grow by overcoming difficulties.

What are harmonious aspects?

Harmonious aspects are for example trine and sextile. They represent ease and flow, when things work well for humanity in a certain area.

What is the difference between major and minor aspects?

Major aspects, like the conjunction, trine and square, are more influential and foundational in astrology.

They have been used since Hellenistic astrology.

Minor aspects, such as the quincunx (150°), are more “modern” aspects that are not considered as important as the major aspects.

What is the connection between aspects and the signs where they occur?

Planets in the same zodiac sign (conjunction) often combine their energies, while planets in the same element (trine) create natural harmony, for example earth signs combined with water signs.

What does a square represent in astrology?

A square occurs when two planets are 90° apart.  A square always occur either between two cardinal signs, two fixed signs or two mutable signs, and is considered to create tension.

What does a trine aspect signify?

A trine indicates a harmonious aspect, often between planets in the same element (e.g. fire signs). It symbolizes ease, talent and natural compatibility.
